SEGD Awards

For more than 15 years, the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD) has conducted its Design Award program. This year, the organizationcollected 340 entries from 10 countries that comprised architectural graphics’ full breadth. Phil Engelke, an RTKL vice president who works in the firm’s Washington, DC office, and served as the jury chairman, said “There’s no one-size-fits-all graphic solution. For some buildings, graphics that convey a sober experience are appropriate, whereas other structures or environments lend themselves to a more evocative or emotional treatment.”

Other jurists included:
• Lynn Befu, associate principal and director of interior architecture at Anshen + Allen (San Francisco)
• David Gibson, co-founder and managing principal of Two Twelve Assoc. (NYC)
• Cybelle Jones, senior associate and creative director for Gallagher & Assoc. (Bethesda, MD)
• Hal Kantner, senior vice president at HOK (Kansas City)
• Carol Newsom, principal of an eponymous, Los Angeles-based design firm
• Alexandra Wood, co-principal of Holmes Wood (London).

They named six Honor designees (the equivalent of first place), 19 Merit prizes (second place), five Jury awards (honorable mentions) and three Lot with Little honorees, who achieved graphic excellence on a shoestring budget. This diverse sampling comprises eclectic scale, media and messages, and embodies how architectural signage and graphics can positively impact an environment. These eclectic projects showcase how architectural signage and graphics can positively impact an environment. Next month, ST will publish additional winners from the SEGD competition.
