Visit Times Square to enjoy the colossal LED-based displays that decorate the region. Even better is that much of Times Square is now closed to traffic, making it an outdoor urban mall, an excellent improvement. My wife, Ligia (“Li”) Cuevas’Johnson and I visit New York City every year and have watched the dynamic digital signage (DDS) spectaculars grow from a few video-type displays to the highly animated, LED-lighted urban canyons you walk today, all because of improved LED technology. Today’s LED display panels are thinner and lighter, which reduce both installation and operating costs.

Interested in DDS? Get on board. The Intl. Sign Assn. (ISA) offers a series of downloadable exterior digital sign articles and its website (signs.org) offers an e-book titled An Expert’s Guide to Mastering the Technology, that writer Justin Ryan says provides a not-technical fast track to understanding the components, best practices and usage. –Darek Johnson
