April 1918 Issue’s Cover Art Repeated in 25 of Next 27 Months

Cover to Cover

THIS COVER FOR the April 1918 issue of Signs of the Times was repeated every month but two through August 1920. Maybe the cover artist had gone to Europe, as World War I was grinding to conclusion during 1918, though not ending until November. WWI occupied everybody’s mind in April 1918, as the first article addressed “Practicing the True Conception of Conservation in the War-Time Window Displays.” See this and other issues dating back to 1906 at signsofthetimes.com/archive.

  • The Sign Artist
This fellow who resembles someone torn from a page of a tale by Edgar Allan Poe — may hold the record for the most cover appearances… forever.
  • Contents Check
In this era, Signs of the Times’ contents were divided among window advertising, show cards, electrical and outdoor advertising, and commercial signs.
