Interactive lighting intrigues passersby in the NoHo Art District in North Hollywood, CA. Capitalizing on the artistic statement that can be made by text and preprogrammed messages, plus animation’s entertainment value, Electroland (Irwindale, CA) conceived the Art Box, which displays lighting animations that are triggered by vehicles as they drive past the building.

The NoHo district, located one mile north of Universal Studios near Valley Village and North Hollywood, sought a unique statement that sets it apart from the surrounding array of entertainment options. The lighting display employs Act One Communications Inc.’s (Irwindale, CA) ActPixel system, which allows the display of decorative color lighting or electronic messages. The 128 x 7-ft. unit, mounted inside the windows of a two-story commercial building, displays preprogrammed messages of famous movie lines or animated light patterns. Drive-by vehicles trigger the changing messages through the use of video-monitoring cameras.

The ActPixel comprises HB RGB LEDs. A built-in IC chip can generate up to a billion changing colors. The system controller allows each pixel to be addressed independently. Act One employed its Digital Video Interface Controller for the NoHo project.
