Manager's To Do

It’s Out with the Old for This Florida Shop

APR. 30-MAY 6

TRADESHOWS Reviewing items from the ISA Expo is not only something Jasper Burton, Cuerden Sign Co. (Conway, AR), is planning, but something all show attendees should be scheduling, too.

SEASONAL May is graduation month, as Mallory Lynn, Signarama Brighton (Brighton, CO), reminds us. “Come up with a few graduation packages to market (like a yard sign, banner, etc.) sold at a bundle rate,” she says. For outdoor events, advertise canopy tents, flags and other outdoor displays.

MAY 7-13

EMPLOYEES Hiring an additional installer and production/fabrication people rank at the top of the to-do list for Andrew Akers, Image360 DC-Silver Spring (Kensington, MD).

NETWORKING Michele Bortree, Stonetree Signs & Graphics (Asheboro, NC) recently joined the Randolph Economic Development Corp., which, she says, opens lots of doors and upgrades Stonetree’s participation in many events and outreach to larger corporations, such as Duke Energy and Toyota.

MAY 14-20

STORAGE This year, Chrysanna Hanes and Sign Art Group (Tampa, FL) are purging old job files. “In May, our intent is to start getting rid of materials that are taking up space in the shop and that we haven’t used in years,” she says. “Of course, as soon as we do that, we’ll need something we got rid of, haha.”

ONLINE “Refresh website.” Two simple words on the docket for Gwen Snow of Innovative Sign Systems in Vista, CA — but they could equally top the list of many of our readers, according to last month’s Big Survey supplement.

MAY 21-27

MANAGEMENT Use a “default calendar,” suggests Adam Brown, Sign Effectz (Milwaukee). Things you do daily should be on it.

COLLECTIONS Modifying their accounting process to charge interest on unpaid past dues is a priority this month for Nicole Bergstrom, SmithCraft Signs (Phoenix).

MAY 28-JUNE 3

VACATION “Complete our backlogged projects, so we can take a summer vacation with the family…” offers John Hotaling, Signarama Woodstock (Woodstock, GA). That might just be the most important to-do item on this entire page!

Ideal Image Specs

Website images help to grab visitors’ attention and help with SEO. The key to good images is making sure they are the correct size for a healthy page-load speed. Optimal file size for images on a website is no more than 200KB, and for full-screen background images, between 1500 pixels (px) and 2500px wide. For most other images a max width of 800px. Keeping these parameters will ensure images load properly:

  • Headers: A header image of 1024px wide will render nicely across the top of your website while not slowing down your webpage speed.
  • Background image: The best size is 1920px wide x 1080px high. This ideal ratio of 16:9 will fill the surface of the webpage without compromising the image quality.
  • Logo image: Usually 250px wide by 100px high and no larger than 320px wide by 70-100px high.

Use JPG file formats for photos and PNG or SVG files for logos and illustrations to ensure proper loading and speed. PNGs are larger than JPGs, which means they are usually slower to load; but PNGs support transparency and are higher quality. Use a free compression tool such as Optimazilla or TinyJPG to help keep file sizes small. Search engines reward sites with faster loading times by including them at the top of search results.
