After having searched for a permanent home since its inception in 1981, the Museum of Neon Art neared its goal on Tuesday, September 22, when the Glendale, CA city council voted unanimously to move forward with lease negotiations for a building located directly across the street from the Americana at Brand lifestyle complex. The approximately 10,000-sq.-ft. brick building is adjacent to the Glendale Central Library. The new museum will include exhibition space, a neon workshop, sign-restoration area, a café, giftstore, outdoor paseo and sculpture garden for live music events.
The city will invest $1 million in a build-out of the museum space, and MONA will commence a fundraising campaign to defray costs associated with the relocation. The first phase in the process is the retention of a consultant to conduct a market and feasibility study to identify the costs and challenges associated with the move and operations in the new location. The market study will be conducted by JB Research at a fee of $16,000.
