Nixalite of America Celebrates 70th Anniversary

Nixalite of America Inc. (East Moline, IL) has recently announced its 70th year in business specializing in pest bird and wildlife control products.

Nixalite was founded in East Moline in the late 1940 s by Charles B. Kaufmann and Fred Burnside. The duo teamed up to find a solution to the problem of pest birds nesting on buildings and structures. After studying the birds and their habitats, the team created what would become the first porcupine wire bird barrier strip. Designed as a physical barrier, these stainless steel needle strips keep pest birds off surfaces by occupying the space with sharp pointed wires.

In 1950, Nixalite started manufacturing and selling these strips as the world’s first bird spike originally called Nixalite Porcupine Wire. Nixalite is currently owned and operated by brothers and co-presidents Cory and Jon Gellerstedt, the grandchildren of Charles Kaufmann.

Our grandfather, Charles Kaufmann, invented the world s first bird spike and started The Nixalite Company in 1950. Seven short years later, on his death bed, our mother Marie made him a promise to keep the business running, said Cory and Jon Gellerstedt. Marie was committed to the company and excelled with her promise. Now, as we enter our 70th year, we are extremely proud to continue and grow the Nixalite heritage.
