Sign Men (Pendleton, OR) has razed a building on its property to make room for a new one.
The shop has torn down an old house on its lot and is now constructing a new 2,500-square-foot facility that will double as a print shop and staging area for jobs, the East Oregonian reports. It will also include an overhang to protect stored supplies and provide cover for truck parking.
Owner Ed Miltenberger told the outlet it took about 15 months to get city approval to build the facility the way they wanted to. When it’s finished, Sign Men will be able to install a new flatbed printer in a “dust-proof environment … with radiant heat from the floor for clean operations,” he said.
Signmaking has been the Miltenbergers’ livelihood for the past 77 years.
In 1946, Sign Men was started as Eastern Oregon Neon Sign Co. by Ed’s father, J.D. Miltenberger. In 1978, Ed took over the family business and opened Sign Men Neon Co. Today, his children, Chad and Rachel, are also helping run the business.
