TV Cameras to Replace Truck Mirrors

Yes, if Daimler gets its way.

Published

on

Daimler Trucks North America (Portland, OR), the parent company of Freightliner and Western Star, has petitioned the U.S. DOT’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to allow camera-monitor systems as an alternative to Federally-mandated rearview mirrors on trucks. Daimler said its modern, camera-based systems can eliminate blind spots and furnish a clear view in all directions; thus, it said, they are more effective than rearview mirrors, which cause extra aerodynamic drag.

Streetside: Daimler presently equips some newer trucks with the camera system and dashboard monitors, and, to comply with the present law, it adds small, side mirrors to these trucks. The mirrors, presumably, would be used to help steer the 80,000 lb. rig roadside, should the electrical system fail.

You could also ask where, on the monitor screen, does one place the spotter mirrors …?
