Signage welcoming visitors to Africatown, a neighborhood known for its rich African and Caribbean heritage, was installed June 5 in Southwest Philadelphia, 6abc Action News reports.

The new sign was installed on a fence along Woodland Ave. at 60th St., marking what organizers describe as both a celebration and a starting point for broader recognition of the area, according to 6abc. The official designation reflects years of cultural presence in the neighborhood for community leaders, as well as a deeper sense of belonging for many residents. The sign’s unveiling is the first step in a larger effort to promote arts, culture and economic development in the area, according to local officials and organizers as quoted by 6abc.
