Cannabis already “illegal,” no further bans permitted

In cannabis-friendly Amsterdam, an unexpected legal ruling has outlawed the city’s infamous ‘no toking’ signs. Marijuana is technically already illegal in the Netherlands, so the signs designating specific no-smoking zones were banned on that basis. Amsterdam citizens and tourists are typically allowed to carry a small amount of marijuana, and it is openly sold. In recent years, the Huffington Post reports, the signs “were stolen so often as collectors’ items the city opened its own merchandise line and began offering them itself for €90 ($125) apiece.”
