A laid-off executive finds new professional life in the sign industry.

The current economic downturn has left even the most able and diligent of workers scrambling for gainful employment. Lane Keen fell victim to this plight when his job as plant manager at Augusta, GA’s G & K Serivces was eliminated when the facility shut down in May.

Initially discouraged by an unfruitful job search, online research led him to contact Sign Biz, a Dana Point, CA-based enterprise that provides support, equipment and marketing services for independent signshops. With guidance and infrastructure assistance from Sign Biz, Lane opened Keen Signs in Augusta on July 29. The shop offers vehicle wraps, tradeshow displays, and logo- and graphic-design services.

He said, “Starting my own business was both easier and harder than expected. I’ve enjoyed it; I wanted to work for myself for a long time, but I never could pull the trigger. On the other hand, now it’s my money on the line, too.”
