Epson America (Long Beach, CA) is offering the 24-in. Stylus Pro 7900 and 44-in. Stylus Pro 9900 printers, which feature an improved ink formulation, a new printer mechanism and an optional calibration and verification system. The printer mechanism, which builds on Epson’s MicroPiezo TFP™ (Thin Film Piezo) printhead, delivers spherical dots with precise dot placement and resolutions up to 2,880 dpi. The number of nozzles and throughput has been doubled in the Stylus Pro 7900 and 9900, resulting in a maximum speed of up to 40 sq. meters/hr.

Epson UltraChrome™ HDR (High Dynamic Range) ink, a fifth-generation, 11-colour ink set, comprises photo black (Pk), universal black matte (MK), light black (Lk), light light black (LLK), cyan, vivid magenta (VM), yellow, light cyan, vivid light magenta (VLM), orange and green, available in 350- and 700ml cartridges. The color gamut addresses the need for color representation in proof production, especially for spot colors.

The optional Epson SpectroProofer™ tool facilitates automatic color-control workflows, color calibration, color certification, a daily color check, profile creation, spot-color matching, color-shift tracking and target measurement. Furthermore, a color-certification label can be printed to support the certification process. The Epson SpectroProofer™ in-line, off-carriage calibration and verification system is powered by an X-Rite spectrophotometer and controlled by Epson SpectroProofer™ software or a third-party RIP. It is available with or without a UV-cut filter as well as changeable black or white backing.

Other new technologies featured in the Stylus Pro 7900 and 9900 include the ability to automatically switch between photo and matte black inks; an integral, automatic, media rotary-knife cutting system; a new, spindleless, roll-holder mechanism; an automatic paper set/release mechanism and an automatic, nozzle-check technology.
