Gerber Scientific Announces Suit Against Roland DGA Corporation

Gerber Scientific, Inc. (South Windsor, CT), in an August 2 press release, announced that it filed a patent-infringement suit last December, in Hartford, CT, Federal District Court, against Roland DGA Corporation, the distribution and sales arm of Roland DG Corporation, Hamamatsu, Japan.

The following is taken verbatim from the Gerber press release: “Gerber’s patent, which covers equipment and a method for printing and cutting sheet-feed material, issued by the U.S. Patent Office in 1996 and was reconfirmed by the Patent Office in May of 2006. . . Gerber is seeking damages in excess of $30,000,000, and an injunction against Roland’s sales of infringing products.”

In an August 3 press release, Roland DGA Corporation (Irvine, CA) said “it will aggressively contest and pursue all options against a patent-infringement suit filed by Gerber Scientific Products.”

In the press release, Roland President and CEO Bob Curtis said, “We are aware of Gerber’s suit. As technological innovators with a vast library of patents, we at Roland have great respect for the rights of intellectual-property holders. However, we firmly believe that our integrated inkjet printer/cutters do not infringe on Gerber technology and that the suit has no merit.”
