Mimaki UV/Solvent Printers

Combines the flexibility of solvent-ink printing with the print durability of UV-cure inks.

Mimaki (Suwanee, GA) is launching its Mimaki JV400-SUV line of printers (introduced as prototypes in 2012) that, using Mimaki-developed inks, combine the flexibility of solvent-ink printing with the print durability of UV-cure inks. Specifically, the 54-in.-wide, JV400-130SUV and the 63.7-in.-wide, JV400 160SUV apply Mimaki’s ink blend that comprises pigments and polymer carried in solvent. Upon contact, the media absorbs and fixes the pigments while the solvent dissipates (via a heater system) and leaves a top-layer of UV-cure polymers. These are UV-cured by a fluorescent, UV-cure lamp and coat the media surface to bring out a smooth, damage-resistant, high-gloss surface. The brightly colored, finished print is comparable to solvent-printer output, the company says, but with UV-ink characteristics. The variable-drop, CMYK, JV400 SUV series presents four ink-drop sizes, up to 1,200 dpi. The prints exit dry – ready for indoor or outdoor installation — or post-processing.
