Opening the Gates of Perception

Published

on

When NYC’s city council banned rolldown metal-security gates, New Yorkers proposed using them as empty canvases for community murals, billboards or public art. The curved metal surface attracted taggers, which led to the council’s ban and endorse the see-through, mesh variety.
Many store owners with metal gates say they will encourage artists to use them as murals. The New York Times, which will be collecting mural ideas, also noted that the most famous artist of the medium was Franco Gaskin, who calls himself “Franco the Great.” He painted approximately 200 metal gates with landscapes and street scenes during the 1970s on 125th St.. Tats Cru, a street-mural company, also contributes much gate art.
