San Francisco is considering adding new signs and billboards along a two-block area on Market St. According to the San Francisco Examiner, voters may be asked in November to approve an exception to the city’s strict billboard laws to create a special sign district that would allow general advertising that reflect the “arts and entertainment character” of Market St. between Fifth and Seventh streets. Supporters say it would help turn the dilapidated strip into a “Times Square of the West.”

A signature-gathering effort has a July 6 deadline to qualify for the ballot.

Money generated through advertising in the new area would be applied to public safety, cleanups and arts education.

The initiative would allow moving signs, electronic ads and illuminated billboards smaller than 500 sq. ft.
