The United States Sign Council’s (USSC) 2008 Sign Design Competition 11 categories attracted approximately 200 entries from sign companies nationwide. The judges included Keith Denny, design VP at Levittown, PA-based Custom Finishers Inc., an electric-sign manufacturer; Judy Heft, director of marketing for SA Intl. (Philadelphia), which produces Flexi™, EnRoute™ and other sign-design-related programs; and Chris Maletich, general manager of SignAd (Neptune, NJ), which produces casino signage, wayfinding and exterior graphics.

According to USSC’s Nancy Maren, the judges based their decisions on a sign’s visual appeal, legibility, originality and effectiveness. Gable Signs (Baltimore) earned the Competition’s Best of Show for its sign for Bamboo Bernie’s, a Caribbean-themed restaurant and nightclub in Pasadena, MD.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demand of meeting the needs of a signshop’s customers – especially in today’s economy, where sales and marketing efforts often require more resources. That said, take a few moments to enjoy photos of the competition’s top finishers.
