Dixie gallery commemorates 150th anniversary of Civil War’s end

On April 9, 1865, at the courthouse in Appomattox, VA, General Robert E. Lee, the commanding general of the Confederate Army, officially surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, his Union counterpart, which ended the Civil War (or, as it’s commonly known in the South, The War Between the States) – and, thus, the four years of fierce conflict that exacted more than 600,000 deaths and millions more injuries. From Gettysburg, PA to Vicksburg, MS, the war brought bloodshed far and wide across the republic. Five days after the surrender, John Wilkes Booth shot and killed President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theater in Washington, DC, which exacerbated national mourning after such harrowing tragedy.
