Saying the number of U.S. toll miles grew by 15.1% from 2003 to 2013, Overdriveonline.com, reporting on a recent Brookings Institute survey, said the increased proliferation of tolls throughout the U.S. had added 5,400 tolled miles (Interstate and non-Interstate) to U.S. highway system, while the total road network grew by 3.6%. Tolled Interstate mileage grew by approximately 17% in the same timeframe, while total Interstate mileage grew by 2%. The Brookings report said the cost rise is due to federal lawmakers’ reluctance and inability to pass a long-term highway funding bill. The report also said the toll trend could continue.
