Will build low-power, electronic-paper displays for industrial and specialized applications

E Ink® Corp. (Cambridge, MA), a developer and producer of electronic-paper display technology, and Chi Lin Technology Corp. (Tainan County, Taiwan,), a manufacturer of vertically integrated, flat-panel displays, announced a partnership to bring low-power industrial and other specialized electrophoretic displays to the marketplace. The partnership helps reduce dependency on paper, printed labels and large batteries, the companies state.
The partnership makes the patented E Ink Vizplex™ imaging film available to Chi Lin for mass production, distribution and sales to consumers. The collaboration expands E Ink’s product offerings and leverages Chi Lin’s ability to engineer and manufacture low-power, customized solutions for the industrial market.
Previously, Chi Lin has incorporated such technological advances as RF/Zigbee, barcode functionality, RFID and advanced sensors into its offerings.
“Electrophoretic-display modules from Chi Lin meet the low-power, high readability requirements of the industrial markets,” according to Sriram Peruvemba, E Ink’s VP of global marketing and sales. “
The partnership will open the door to small- and medium-sized display opportunities in such areas as logistics, signage, medical devices, automation, smart labels, manufacturing and data collection. According to market research firm DisplaySearch, the e-paper market is expected to reach $9 billion by 2018.
“Our partnership with E Ink makes electrophoretic, active-matrix and direct-drive displays accessible to the expanding demands in the industrial and specialized sectors,” said YG Hsu, Chi Lin’s president.
One application will be electronic, shelf-label space. Shop owners often struggle to manage in-store product-price information in a timely and economical manner. This solution would help support spontaneous updates.
Jointly developed products will be going into production later this year.
