Internationally acclaimed pop art pioneer James Rosenquist (1933-2017) began his career as a New York City billboard painter. “This was perfect training, as it turned out, for an artist about to explode onto the pop art scene,” Rosenquist once observed. He applied many signpainting techniques to his large-scale art installation pieces, often juxtaposing recognizable consumer icons and advertising imagery to create political messages reflective of the era.
