Ingo Maurer Shares Insights on OLEDs

The OLED Lighting Design Summit, scheduled for June 21-22 in London, is attracting support from associations and industry insiders across the lighting industry. The OLED-lighting market is predicted to be worth $4.5 billion by 2013, according to analysts at Nanomarkets, and lighting designers are increasingly working with the technology.
The OLED Lighting Design Summit is bringing together the leaders from both the design world and the manufacturers to discuss the opportunities. See more at http://bit.ly/bLrB70.
The summit recently confirmed Novaled and GE as high-level supporters. Its speaker line-up includes Osram, Philips, Acuity Brands Lighting, Jason Bruges Studios and renowned lighting designer Ingo Maurer. Maurer will be demonstrating his latest OLED lighting designs and giving a presentation on “Utilising and Innovating with OLED – Pushing the Boundaries” at the summit.

OLED Insider, the event organisers, briefly interviewed Maurer and shared the conversation here:

Q: What are you currently working on within OLED, and what are your plans for this year?
A: New OLED objects, partially with transparent OLED, to show that we are the leading design company in OLED technology.

Q: You’ve already produced OLED luminaires, and there’s considerable interest from architects and chandelier makers amongst others. Where do you see the biggest market for OLED lighting in the near future?
A: It depends on the light output and lifetime — first private lighting, followed by commercial scale stuff.

Q: Where have you seen the most interesting and innovative use of OLEDs?
A: Philips did great work with the OLED wall. Also it’s nice to reminisce to the bulb in 2009, and our Flying Future back from 2006.

Q: Who and what do you think will be making headlines in 2010?
A: We’ll see in Frankfurt and Milano, what will come up. We’ll be showing exciting new things with transparent OLEDs from Novaled and ORBEOS OLED from Osram.

Q: What are the main challenges still remaining for the industry?
A: Size, price, power and lifetime
