The Zoning Hearing Board of Easton, PA has denied Lafayette College’s plans to add over 600 sq. ft. of new signage, lehighvalleylive.com reports.

The college was looking to add six signs along West Pierce Street, which include a 382-sq.-ft. leopard graphic and a 5-sq.-ft. entrance marker. Combined, the signs would exceed city zoning limits by more than 550 sq. ft., according to lehighvalleylive.com. The signs are intended as part of the college’s Kirby Sports Center facade project, which also involves removing old precast concrete, adding new masonry and maroon metal panels, and building a ticket office with a canopy.

Lafayette Project Manager Lauren Daniels says the signs are meant to provide visitors with clear directions to the facility. However, the board members at the hearing raised concerns about the classification of some of the signs, as well as the signs’ brightness and overall impact on the neighborhood.

Lafayette agreed to replace the signs with non-illuminated equivalents in the application.
