Electric Signs

California is asking for a waiver on the federal ban or ads on electronic freeway signs.

On November 2, 2008, Mercury News.com reported that, in California, electronic freeway signs, which broadcast traffic updates and Amber Alerts, might include ads to raise money for rest-stop renovations and freeway maintenance. Federal regulations currently prohibit ads on electronic freeway signs, but the state is requesting a waiver on those laws.

Caltrans says it needs $14 million a year to upgrade rest stops and re-open those it has closed.

Traffic authorities affirm that concern for driver safety trumps revenue raising.
