Signs of Eire

A gallery of distinctive Irish signage

Published

on

For many people, Ireland holds an almost mystical quality. Vast expanses of verdant fields, hillsides and coastlines from County Cork to Donegal Bay have captivated natives and visitors (some, such as the invading Viking armies of the 9th century A.D., weren’t so welcome) alike, and the legendary warmth and joviality of Irish pubs have been replicated (with varying degrees of success and authenticity) the world over.

Understandably, Irish signage and its characteristic vibrant colors and creative typefaces reflect the buoyant spirit of its people, which has remained resilient through famines and civil unrest. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, when some say “we’re all Irish,” here’s a gallery of signage from a trio of Irish artisans.
