Target Removes Gender-Based Signage from Stores

Retailers responds to criticism from groups calling signs sexist

In response to accusations from customers, Target has decided to remove any gender-based signage from its store, the International Business Times reported. The article cited the example of a woman using Twitter to express her dissatisfcation that a Target store’s signage referred to "building sets"
separately from "girl building sets". The retaining giant is also reportedly planning to install signs in its bedding section that simply reply to childrens’ bedding projects rather than boys’ or girls’, as well as removing any colors of paper that make suble reference to one gender versus the other.

In a statement on the company’s website, Target said, "Over the past year, guests have raised important questions about a handful of signs in our stores that offer product suggestions based on gender. In some cases, like apparel, where there are fit and sizing differences, it makes sense. In others, it may not. Historically, guests have told us that sometimes—for example, when shopping for someone they don’t know well—signs that sort by brand, age or gender help them get ideas and find things faster. But we know that shopping preferences and needs change and, as guests have pointed out, in some departments like Toys, Home or Entertainment, suggesting products by gender is unnecessary."
