Thornton Business Owners Fight to Keep Sign-Twirlers

Twirlers allowed under current ordinance

Published

Small-business owners in Thornton, CO have begun a petition to prevent the removal of sign-twirlers, according to the Denver Post. Sign-twirlers, who spin and dance with signs to attract the attention of motorists and pedestrians, are legal under the city’s current codes and ordinances.

The small-business owners say sign twirlers bring needed revenue and are an important advertising vehicle.

City officials are trying to balance aesthetic considerations with free speech and small-business advertising. There have also been recent complaints about the content of signs advertising medical marijuana. A proposed ordinance for Thornton would prevent sign-twirlers on medians, in roundabouts, and in other locations that might obstruct traffic flow.
