A city-county planning board in Whitefish, MT, is weighing several proposals to preserve historic signs in the city, the Daily Inter Lake reported. The city previously lost a lawsuit that involved an ice-cream-cone mural; a court ruling noted inconsistent sign-code enforcement. Council members expressed a desire to preserve several well-known local signs that may be removed during construction, renovations or roadwork. These include a neon cloverleaf sign that decorates a local bar.

The city is considering an amendment to grant exceptions to historic and/or iconic local signs that are at least 40 years old or highly recognizable. Some officials, however, have expressed concern that such an amendment would make removing unsightly signage difficult.
