Why Your Website Might Be Costing You Business

And what to fix first.

THINK OF YOUR WEBSITE as your digital storefront. If it’s cluttered, confusing or outdated, potential customers are walking right past it — without ever calling, emailing or clicking.

Too many signshop websites still look like they were built in 2009 and haven’t been touched since. Or worse, they were built by a nephew who “knows computers.” Your website doesn’t have to be fancy, but it does have to be functional — and fast.

First Impressions Are Digital

Studies show that visitors form an opinion about your business within 50 milliseconds of landing on your site. That’s faster than it took you to read this sentence. If your homepage is cluttered, has too much text or features photos of outdated signage styles, that impression isn’t great.

What should you fix first? Start with the basics:

  • Clear navigation. People should be able to find services, pricing and contact info without a scavenger hunt. And please, by the love of all that is holy, include your address and phone number at the bottom of every page.
  • Modern visuals. Swap out any pixelated photos or ancient clip art. Use real photos of your best work instead.
  • Speed. If your site loads slowly, people leave. Period. Compress those huge images and check your hosting.

Make It Mobile-First

Most of your potential customers are checking you out from their phones. That means your website needs to work on mobile — not just technically, but beautifully.

Can users tap a button to call you? Can they find your address in two seconds? If not, you’re losing leads to the competitor down the street who has already figured this out.

One Page Is Better Than a Hot Mess

If building or fixing a site feels overwhelming, remember this: a simple, well-designed one-page website with the right information will outperform a bloated mess every time.

Highlight your services, showcase 4-5 solid images of your work, include a short testimonial or two, and make it easy to contact you. Done right, that’s all you need to get the call.

AI Pro Tip of the Month:

Use ChatGPT to audit your website. Try a prompt like, “Pretend you’re a customer looking for sign services. Visit my website [insert your URL] and tell me what’s confusing, missing or outdated.” Then ask for suggestions to improve readability, SEO or even rewrite your homepage copy in a friendlier tone.
