Your Portfolio Isn’t Doing You Any Favors

Here’s how to fix it.

YOUR PROJECT GALLERY is one of the most powerful tools on your website — and one of the most overlooked.

Too often, it’s a sad little page with tiny thumbnails, zero context and captions like “Sign for Jim.” That doesn’t help your customers understand what you do. And it sure doesn’t convince them to hire you.

Let’s be blunt: your portfolio should work as hard as your sales team. Maybe harder. It’s where potential customers go to imagine what you could do for them. So, if it’s weak, you’re missing the mark.

Show Off the Right Work

Here’s the first step: Only show the types of projects you want more of. If you’re trying to land more fleet-wrap jobs or multi-location signage packages, don’t clutter the gallery with vinyl decals from 2017.

Use this space to shape the narrative of your business. What are you best at? What projects make you proud? What would make a prospect say, “Wow, I didn’t know they could do that?”

Add Context, Every Time

Photos alone are not enough. People want to know the story behind the sign:

  • Who was the client, and what did they need?
  • What challenges did you solve?
  • What materials or techniques did you use?
  • How did the final product help the client succeed?

Even two or three sentences per project can transform a “pretty picture” into a compelling case study. Bonus points if you include a testimonial quote or a stat (like increased foot traffic or visibility).

Keep It Fresh

Your portfolio should not be a museum of past glory. Update it quarterly. Swap out older projects. Add seasonal work. Show your shop is active, in demand and doing current, relevant work.
If you only do one thing this month, pick five great projects and add proper write-ups to each. It’s one of the simplest upgrades you can make to your site — and one of the most effective.

AI Pro Tip of the Month:

Use ChatGPT to turn your project notes into mini case studies. Prompt it like this: “Here are the details of a recent vehicle wrap we did. Turn it into a short, engaging write-up for our website portfolio.” Add before/after photos and you’re good to go.
