Zombies Ahead

Electronic signs hacked during morning commute

Published

on

Construction signs warning “Zombies Ahead,” “Watch for Hunters,” and “Be alert for tanks” (photo here) greeted morning commuters on state Highway 160 near Fort Mill, South Carolina on March 20. Pranksters apparently tampered with the construction signs, though authorities could not say whether the signs were altered onsite or remotely.

This isn’t the first time road signs have been hacked. In 2009, Wired magazine reported similar sign hacks in Austin, Texas and along the East coast, where commuters were advised to watch for Godzilla and, of course, zombies.  The magazine also noted that most road signs have the same password, making them an easy target for hackers.
