Clear Channel Digital Billboards Pay Tribute to UCLA’s Coach Wooden

Clear Channel Outdoor has featured the inspirational aphorisms of UCLA’s legendary coach John Wooden to pay tribute to his recent passing. The pro bono campaign rotates the messages across more than 70 digital billboards in the Clear Channel Outdoor Los Angeles network. Each display closes with “Thank you for your inspiration, Coach.”
Some of his favorite sayings were “Have utmost concern for what’s right rather than who’s right,” “Success travels in the company of very hard work,” “There is no trick, no easy way,” and “Make a decision! Failure to act is often the biggest failure of all.”
“Coach was a personal inspiration to my life, as I grew up in Southern California and as a high school sports coach. We saw an opportunity here as a company to honor someone who has meant so much to this community and the sporting world,” said Layne Lawson, Clear Channel Outdoor’s area director of public affairs.
Wooden compiled an overall 885-203 win-loss record. Twenty-seven of his 40 years as a head coach were spent as the UCLA Bruins’ coach. Under Wooden, UCLA won an unprecedented 10 NCAA championships, including seven consecutive (1966-73). He also compiled 38 straight NCAA tournament victories and an 88-game winning streak over four seasons, which included consecutive 30-0 seasons.
The Clear Channel Outdoor campaign runs through June 2010.
