The historic blade sign for downtown Lewiston, ID’s iconic theater was removed Feb. 24, according to The Lewiston Tribune.

Managing Editor Matt Baney’s article states that a replacement is in the works. “The group working to restore the theater had wanted to refurbish the sign, but discovered it was ‘way beyond repair,’ said Brad Cannon, of Lewiston, who is the group’s construction manager,” reads a portion of the article.

A plan is in place for a new vertical sign to be installed eventually. “It’s a historic sign — we’re not going to change it,” Cannon is quoted in the article. “It’s not going to be smaller, it’s not going to be bigger, it’s going to look exactly the same.”

The sign, which has been updated since its 1921 installation, will be stripped down to its interior structure, then rebuilt with new wiring and LED lighting. The readerboard signs will be changed back to the way they were in the past, per the article. The work is being funded by a $100,000 grant from the Idaho Heritage Trust through the National Park Service.
