(The following information was provided by the Nevada Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources.)

The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, and Lorenzi Park, its home in Las Vegas, were both listed in the State Register of Historic Places on December 6, 2013. These listings celebrate the reactivation of the State Register program, which had been dormant since 2009 due to budgetary restrictions.

The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, constructed in 1959, is located at the historic entrance to the Las Vegas Strip. While the Strip has changed, the sign remains virtually unchanged. The sign reflects Googie architecture, a style influenced by the Streamline Moderne of the 1940s and by the car culture of the 1950s and 1960s. Thomas Young Jr., chairman of the Young Electric Sign Co.y that owns the sign, said, “It has been rewarding to see that this sign we have cared for these many decades is regarded so highly by so many. We know it will continue to convey an important message about the history of Las Vegas and the bright future ahead.” More information about the sign can be found at www.yesco.com.

Lorenzi Park and the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign join 148 other resources throughout Nevada listed in the State Register.
