Spec Ed

  • The industry desperately needs articles on “It’s your shop, you write the spec.” So many acrylic options, so many LED options, so many substrates being used inappropriately. Teach us how to spec ACM for indoor or outdoor use, teach us to spec LED type, lens and color temp for various illuminated letter options, teach us the world of translucent vinyl and why use LED-specific versus the still available OG translucent vinyl. — Edward DeZuzio, Butler Sign Co., Wayne, Nj

Quoting Questions

  • I think it would be beneficial if there were articles about the proper way to quote a job. It seems to me some signmakers don’t include all the hidden costs in jobs. Do you include the time it takes to drive to Home Depot to get something needed for the project, are you adding a sufficient markup on materials, etc.? — John Miller, Signs by Autografix, Branford, Ct

Learning by Design

  • The redesigned signs article was eye-opening (see ST, January 2024). It showed the wisdom of getting an advance deposit, limiting redesigns to a set number, and making the client financially responsible for work completed. We rethought this issue decades ago and decided to work for less complex [committee or confused] clients who appreciate our ability to design in a way that will bring them the most beneficial results because that is what will keep them and us in business. — Larry Mitchell, SignChef, El Dorado Hills, Ca

Reader Requests

  • I would greatly appreciate reading articles that offer guidance on estimating techniques, navigating permitting challenges, and exploring effective market approaches. Essentially, I am seeking insights on improving business operations and attracting talented employees without straining the payroll. — Harold Pedley, Sign Engineering, San Juan, Pr
  • I would like to read more articles on how signs, building design and communication all work together for small business owners. — Edward Shinn, Ed Shinn Signs, Mt. Morris, MI

Architectural Accolades

  • The article on dimensional architectural signage was well done with great examples (see ST, December 2023). Designers appear to have been pushing themselves lately and the outcome is fantastic. — Matt Robinson, Eastern Sign Tech, Burlington, Nj
