Seeing Red

Crossing the finish line

In 2000, the Houston Marathon signed Compaq Computer Corp. as its sponsor. However, the city told the Houston Marathon that it couldn't paint its logo on the street at the finish line. What's a marathon to do?

Enter JVI Image Graphics (Houston), a div. of Joe Valencik Inc. (Houston), to complete all graphics in four months.

Because of the time constraints, JVI focused on the finish line. JVI designers Jason Barrera and Susan Valencik created the layouts using photography and Compaq and Marathon logos. JVI created a 40-ft. large-format mesh banner using 3M Industrial Adhesives & Tapes Div. 8671/8914 perforated window film and laminate (double-sided for news crews and photographers) for use on the finish-line structure.

Then it added a 3M 30 x 28-ft. street graphic created using Compaq red with the marathon's logo, for a red-carpet spectacular finish. The street graphic, made with 8662-10 Street Graphic Base film with 8947 Street Graphic laminate, ended up being the largest 3M street graphic ever produced, 3M reported.3M Industrial Adhesives & Tapes Div.

Compaq also authorized JVI to cover 56 entrance doors to the Compaq campus facility to create event awareness with its employees.
